Third alternative before LS polls: Left

Jalandhar, Aug 10 (PTI) The Left parties today said there will be a third alternative to the UPA and the NDA before the Lok Sabha polls. "Our party is trying to form a Third Front to provide an alternative to both UPA and NDA to the nation before the Lok sabha polls," Yechury said.

Asked whether Left Parties would project Mayawati as its prime ministerial candidate after she claimed yesterday that she had the political acumen to become the Prime Minister of the country, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury evaded a reply on the matter. CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat was also not forthcoming on Mayawati's projection as Left party's prime ministerial candidate.

Stage set for Musharraf's impeachment tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government has summoned the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, to meet on Monday evening to initiate the impeachment process against President Pervez Musharraf, charging him with abrogating the constitution and damaging the country's democratic processes.

The National Assembly will meet at 5pm. "This impeachment is in accordance with the constitution and the law and no other authority like the supreme court can interfere in it," Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) spokesman Ahsan Iqbal told reporters on Saturday.

LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI: Coming amid BSP's attempt to net upper castes, Mayawati's announcement of a political heir from 'chamar' community, a subcaste of the Scheduled Castes marks a confidence that a reminder of its intrinsically Dalit character would not hurt its outreach to Brahmins, Vaishyas and others.

As BSP foot soldiers were told to kickstart the Maya-for-PM campaign, the UP chief minister appeared to be playing to the pan-Indian Dalit community via a well thought out script, even if risking being seen as jumping the gun in the absence of an endorsement from the ally, UNPA.

JMM may withdraw support to Koda govt

RANCHI: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leadership, which helped UPA bail out the Manmohan Singh government with its five MPs voting in favour of the trust vote in the Lok Sabha recently, has decided to "teach a lesson" to the Congress if it continues to ignore its demand for making party chief Shibu Soren as Jharkhand CM.

"We have always helped Congress in times of crisis and ended up betrayed," leader of the JMM in Jharkhand assembly Champai Soren said, adding the party won't sit silent this time.

Rebel BJP MLAs revolt against Uttarakhand CM B C Khanduri

NEW DELHI: The rebel group of 25 BJP MLAs from Uttarakhand met party president Rajnath Singh here on Sunday to vent their ire against state Chief Minister B C Khanduri, party sources said.

The delegation, led by senior BJP leader and former state chief minister B S Koshiyari, complained to Singh about the "high-handed" behaviour of Khanduri.

"The delegation voiced its concern on the working of the chief minister. The party chief has taken serious view of the complaint. The delegation included four ministers," a senior party leader said.

Natwar Sing Joins BSP

Former External Affairs Minister and suspended Congress leader K Natwar Singh today joined the BSP along with two Samajwadi Party leaders Shahid Siddiqui and S.P. Singh Baghel.

They joined the party in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, who addressed a huge gathering of her party's national convention of workers. Siddiqui and Baghel have been made national general secretaries.

Singh, who had to quit the Union government in the wake of the oil-for-food scam in Iraq, was a member of the Rajya Sabha till recently and his term has ended.
